Chocolate stains on the carpet

Elaborating on my previous post, when it comes to cleaning chocolate stains off the carpet, I talked with some friends and we more or less came to a consensus.

Obviously, the sooner the better after the stain happens is the best time to clean it. Blot the stain with a clean soft dry cloth (usually cotton) to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. It’s usually best to start from the outside edges and work toward the center of the stain when blotting. Mix some liquid laundry soap and warm water (I usually use 4 parts water to 1 part soap) and sponge the stain with a sponge that is nice and wet, yet not dripping soap solution. Sponge up as much (hopefully all) of the stain as you can, then as a last step rinse the sponge really well in the sink so it no longer has any soap in it, then sponge the same spot one last time with the rinsed, wet sponge to remove as much soap residue as possible. Blot with a clean dry towel, then if you want sprinkle some baking soda on the wet spot to absorb moisture.

Usually for me chocolate stains come in the form of milk chocolate, such as chocolate lollipops, candy bars, or chocolate milk. The liquid is easier to clean if you get to it fast enough; all of them more work if the stain dries, but still can be removed.
