Thoughts
I started this project some four or five months ago. No, I haven’t worked on it that long because I hit a bit of a brick wall — How in the heck do I manage to have expanding/collapsing sidebar elements and save the state with cookies? So, I gave up.
At the time, I was trying to use jQuery, and it worked fine for the expand/collapse feature. However, I couldn’t figure out how to use cookies with it. I’m no javascript coder. Nope, I’m XHTML, CSS, and a little PHP.
Around that time, N.Design Studio released the iTheme using Brothercake’s Docking Boxes Script. I didn’t want to go that route.
I don’t think Facebook had implemented the movable boxes yet. They only had expanding/collapsing boxes.
Jump forward a few months. I’m in South Korea and off work for a week during Chuseok. No plans. Plenty of time on my hands.
I decided to use Brothercake’s script since Facebook now had movable boxes. Most of the design work had been done back when I started, so all I had left to do was put the thing together.
After many long hours of work (I haven’t been in the theme-designing game for a while, so I’m a little rusty), I finally got this thing working. I’m sure there are some bugs, and you should definitely let me know about those. The theme was tested on Wordpress 2.1 also.
There are a few things I wish I could’ve done. In particular, I wanted to put a menu across the top of the page, but saw problems with my header. Because I aligned the header to the right, that could possibly leave little room for people with long blog names. This is also why I didn’t put the title in the tiny area above the left sidebar.
I can see many ways in which someone could customize this theme. There are a lot of possibilities, and I wanted to throw in each one of them. But, I decided to keep it as simple as possible and let the user customize to their desire.
This is, by far, the most heavily coded theme I’ve released. The Brothercake script isn’t huge, but it’s a few more kb than I would have liked.
The idea for this theme came shortly after I released the Facebook-Mimic Theme for MySpace. I actually wouldn’t have put this theme together if I had just thought of it now because I think Facebook has gone down hill by allowing users to flood their pages with applications. But, it needed to be finished.
If you have any problems, feel free to let me know about them. I’ll try to get back to you as soon as I can. But, please be sure to read the “readme.txt” file first. Some things can be solved by just glancing at that. So, enjoy.

Fantastic theme! I use Facebook frequently and I can already see some intriguing ways I could use this theme. Keep up the great work!
P.S. Stumbled!
Mikael, I agree that there are many ways to use this theme. I went through countless different designs and functions that I wanted to use. But, in the end, I had to just leave it simple.
Sprucing up the color scheme could make a huge difference. There are several plugins that might work nicely with it. You can even go as far as making the posts themselves expand/collapse. I would definitely like to see what others can come up with using this theme.
I mostly wanted to work with some different ways to use the “docking boxes” and jQuery.

This is just what I was looking for, however, it’s got a few CSS issues when viewed in IE.. specially the arrows on the expandable widgets cover the widget title.
or is it just my browser?
Abbas, I see nothing wrong with your page. I’m viewing it in IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.7. What version of IE are you using?
If your browser doesn’t seem to be the problem, check to see what version you have. I remember fixing an issue with the widgets and quickly released Version 1.1 of the theme. Maybe that’s the problem.
The “Go to TNerd.com” link you placed on your page is breaking the layout though.
Justin, frankly I was not expecting a reply at least until tomorrow, thanks for your swift response.
I am using IE 6 and Latest version of Firefox. Firefox treats it good but messes up a little bit in IE. I have taken the screenshot(who can I sent it do you?).
I have removed the TNerd link but it didn’t help.
-Abbas
Abbas, I’ve fixed the issue with IE6. I had no way of testing on IE6 before because IE7 replaces IE6 when you download it. But, I found a fix for that.
I’ve uploaded a new copy of the theme (Version 1.2.1). You can simply download that, and the problem should be corrected. If you don’t want to install an entirely new copy, just upload these files: dbx.css, style.css, sidebar.php, sidebar2.php, functions.php, images/arrow2.gif and readme.txt.
Thanks for pointing this out to me. I wouldn’t have had any idea if you didn’t. You forced me to find a way to cater to the IE6 crowd, even though I was on that browser until a couple of months ago.
Justin, It did change a little bit, however, the arrows are still covering the first 3 letters of the widget labels.
-Abbas
Sorry about that. You also need to upload the new functions.php and images/arrow2.gif files too. I’ll update my last comment so others will see too.
Thanks Justin. It works like a charm!

It’s a great theme, I tested in my site but I have a problem when I reorder widgets.

Jose, I don’t know what you’ve done to the blog, but it’s not anything like it’s supposed to be. The theme works fine with widgets. It’s been tested on Firefox, IE6, IE7, Opera, and Safari.
I noticed you have two search boxes that both have the same id, and you cannot have two things with the same id. And, why do you have a comment form on the front page?
I suggest downloading the theme again and using it properly.

I prefer blogger over wordpress. I use both but I like the feel of blogger better. It is easier to stay organized.
A facebook themed wordpress would be unusual though. I don’t know if people will know what to think. I will have to try this widget out. I have a facebook as well so this is very interesting. Thank you for the post.
Have a great day!

Nice done. Does it include Facebook’s Beacon as well?
Excellent job mate! I guess you’re a facebook fan
Skolarbeten, thanks. I’m not sure what Facebook’s Beacon is though.
Areeb, I was a huge Facebook fan until people started putting hundreds of applications on their profile. It looks like they might be going the way of MySpace (it’s still better though).
ill be checking this one.. thanks
nice theme, i gonna try it
cheers

Justin, love the facebook theme. but i’m having a couple of problems with it.
sidebar 1, when i uncomment the ad block and insert an ad, nothing happens.
this code here:
<?php /* Feel free to uncomment this and put your ADS in this section
*/ ?>
also, i’ve had a couple of comments since i’ve thrown up your theme. but i no emails telling me there are fresh comments on my site. does that have something to do with the theme?
damn i wish i could edit my previous comment.
i also wanted to ask if the tag cloud widget works with a particular tag cloud plugin.
thanks
Thanks JennieC and Beavis. I’m glad you like it.
Cojito
From what I can tell by looking at your source code is that you haven’t added any ads at all in that section or uncommented the PHP. You need to delete the PHP code that you posted for it to work properly.
The comments thing would have nothing to do with a theme. Themes just change how your site looks, not how the backend works.
I’m not sure about tag cloud plugins. I haven’t tried any of those out. You’d have to ask that over at the WordPress support forums.
first, thanks for responding.
yeah, my bad. i was asking dumb questions. i figured out the tag cloud. it doesn’t need a plug in, i just needed to tag a few posts.
also, i see a lot of people are having problems with comment notification after the latest upgrade. so far no fix.
but i did uncomment the code in the sidebar, and i threw in an ad to test it out, and nothing showed up. so i just put it back the way it was.
here’s what i did. i deleted the php and put an ad after the
i also tried just adding text in that area. nothing.
ok, i’m leaving the code uncommented with a graphic ad in there. nothing shows right now. no doubt i’ve missed something obvious. if you get a chance please have a look. meantime i’ll keep trying to figure it out myself. thanks.

Oh man if only facebook still looked like that… It’s so full of garbage now.
Cojito
Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond. I must’ve overlooked your comment. Look at the code below. You must delete the first and last lines (anything that’s not part of the div).
Put your ad in between the opening and closing of the div.
Dominico
Thanks. It’s only garbage because the average user doesn’t know that it’s garbage. It’s beyond me why people think it’s cool to add a thousand different applications to their page.
